When I started looking back at my history textbooks from high school, it feels almost like outright propaganda compared to what many other authors recount. This has made me feel incredibly strangely like I can’t trust anything. The American government says about American history. The book “lies my history tea her told me” is pretty good. I’ll have to check that one out. If it makes you feel better I learned about this in my high school history class, I’m from Buffalo, NY. I often find that my school did a good job of teaching stuff like this.

To which I remind them that most of the black history is distorted or omitted to ensure the narrative around black people stays intact. The same happens with other POC. Then I tell them to think that if they never learned about this, what other history is missing from their education. The US really doesn’t like to cover the uglier parts of our history in school. Instead, we are taught ‘American Exceptionalism’ which is why our population is so ill-informed about the abuses of our current government.
